Select your England squad for Brazil 2014

Back to back defeats at Wembley left many questioning the merit of England making the trip to Brazil at all. But manager Roy Hodgson insists he has learnt much from the defeats to Chile and Germany about his squad, and the options he has when selecting his squad for the World Cup.

If you were Hodgson, and were selecting your squad today, who would be in it? Use the interactive poll below to select your squad of 23, and be sure to use the comment section to explain your decisions!

  1. My squad:

Hart, Forster, Ruddy; Johnson, Walker, Jones, Baines, Cole, Cahill, Jagielka; Carrick, Henderson, Cleverley, Wilshere, Barkley, Gerrard, Walcott, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Townsend, Milner; Rooney, Sturridge, Carroll, Welbeck

Biggest call is probably no Lampard – can only see his form heading in one direction this season.

    • Henderson and Cleverley ahead of Lallana and Lampard? You brave, brave man! 😉

      • Cleverley is in there to annoy you, mainly.

        🙂

Not really, but for me, there is so little to pick between players like Henderson, Cleverley and Lallana. In a way, that is the challenge that the Chile and Germany games highlighted – lots of decent players, not many (enough) international quality players.

  2. Sorry guys but I could only pick twenty. There wasn’t Ravel Morrison, Steven Caulker or Nathaniel Clyne on the list. Agreed on no Lampard, Cleverley, Barkley or Henderson though!

  3. They could end up in a group with Colombia and Iran, so on that basis, Last 16 minimum. Then you hope they have an evening game in West Brazil. Hopefully that results in a last 8 tie, which could go to penalties, and for once we might win! But foolish to make a prediction before the 6th December!

  4. Hart – Foster – Amos – Walker- Cole- Baines – Cahill – Jagielka – Smalling – Jones – Gerrard – Lampard – Barkley – Wiltshire – Ravel Morrison – Townsend – Walcott – Oxlade-Chamberlain – Lallana – Rooney – Sturridge – Welbeck – Lambert

  6. Hart, Forster, Butland
Johnson, Smalling, Jagielka, Dawson, Jones, Caulker, Baines, Cole ( Shaw if any of the left backs is injured)
Townsend, Carrick, Gerrard, Wilshere, Lallana, Zaha, Walcott, Lampard
    Rooney, Lambert, Sturridge, Welbeck

  7. Tommy S says:

    Hart – Foster – Forster – Johnson – Walker – Terry – Jones – Cahill – Jagielka – Cole – Baines – Townsend – Walcott – Oxlade Chamberlain – Gerrard – Lampard – Wilshere – Milner – Rooney – Defoe – Lambert – Sturridge – Wellbeck

    First 11 of
    Hart
    Johnson – Cahill – Jagielka – Cole
    Townsend – Gerrard – Wilshere – Wellbeck
    Rooney
Sturridge (Replace Sturridge with Lambert if we need to bag a headed goal late on from a set piece).

Super subs of Lampard, Oxlade Chamberlain, John Terry (he’s an idiot but he’s a good centre back and great in the opposition’s area). Bring on Milner for Wellbeck if we need to protect a lead.

    • Interesting choices Tommy. Why Johnson over Walker and Cole over Baines?

No place for Lallana in the squad?

And you’ve brought back John Terry!! Wowza – why do you think England still needs JT? Do others agree?

  9. Good effort, I’ve done the same thing for our local club:
